Tommy Gunned Down
Tommy Morrison, the most embarrassing entry in John Wayne’s
legacy since The Conqueror, has died of complications of a disease that he
insisted was not HIV at the age of 44. Morrison won 49 of his 52 pro fights, 44
by knockout, most notably winning the WBO title in 1995 over George Foreman,
but his career effectively ended in 1996 when he was diagnosed HIV-positive. He
insisted this was a false positive and repeatedly tested negative, but other
than a few bouts of dubious integrity, he never fought professionally again,
instead opting for a few volunteer beatings of civilians between DUIs.
Nicknamed The Duke based on being John Wayne’s grandnephew, Morrison briefly
followed in unc’s footsteps, allowing Sylvester Stallone, Talia Shire and Burt
Young to not be the worst actor in Rocky V.
