The Shaggy D.O.A.
Dean Jones, the human cartoon that tied
Disney’s live-action films of the 1960s and 1970s to its animated past, has
died of complications from Parkinson’s disease at the age of 84. Long-limbed
and jug-eared with an expressive face and a high-pitched voice, Jones was built
for the physical comedy of such hits as The Shaggy DA and The Love Bug, as well
as dreck like That Darn Cat, The Million Dollar Duck and The Ugly Dachshund.
Jones did play against type as a special guest killer in two different episodes
of Murder, She Wrote, though in the first, he used a dog trained to close a
door, rather than get his very devout hands dirty.
